How to Update BIOS

All latest Motherboards today,486/Pentium etc ensure that upgrades are easily obtained by incorporating the system BIOS. in a flash memory component. With Flash BIOS, there is no need to replace an EPROM component.Once downloaded the upgrade utility fits on a disc allowing the user to save ,verify and update the system BIOS.

Consider if there is a un-formatted disk type the following

format a:/s

If using a formatted disk type

sys a:

This procedure ensures that a clean boot when you are flashing the new BIOS

Download the BIOS file

Download the correct BIOS file by clicking on the file name of the BIOS file which you wish to download .Save the BIOS file and the Flash utility file in the boot disk you have created .Unzip the BIOS file and the flash utility file.If you don't have an Unzip or Winrar download the latest WINRAR from here

You should have extracted two files

  1. Flash BIOS utility Eg:flash5845.exe and a BIOS file as
  2. BIOS Eg:6562966.bin

Now make use of the latest flash utility available unless otherwise specified .This information is usually provided

Upgrade the System BIOS

During the boot up write down the old BIOS version because you will need to use it for the BIOS backup file name.Place the bootable disk the one which containing the BIOS file and the flash utility in a drive and reboot the system.

At the A:>prompt type the corresponding flash BIOS utility and BIOS file with extension

Example:

flash 8973356.bin

From the flash memory write menu ,select "Y" to "DO YOU WANT TO SAVE BIOS"if you want to save current BIOS ,then type the name of your current BIOS and its extension after FILE NAME to SAVE eg:a:\5926526.bin

As of now the BIOS has been upgraded and if we don't want to install the upgraded version simply type "N" and press enter.Beware though that you wont be able to recover from a possible failure.

Select "Y"to proceed forward. You will be getting a message called "Are you sure to program"?

Wait until it displays "Message :Power Off or Reset the System"
After the completion the BIOS upgradation loading should be done.Once the loading is success eject the disk and reboot the system once. If you want to save at this stage BIOS will not be successfully saved so make sure not to turn off the PC since the computer can't have capacity to load one more flash. If it is the scenario dont touch your system unless or until the problem is resolved.Get confirmation that BIOS has been loaded properly and make a note of BIOS identifier. This process should be done while the system is in rebooting status.

BIOS Updating TIPS

1.Make sure you never turn off or reset your computer during the flash process. This will corrupt the BIOS data
2.Copy of the current BIOS will not be done in any disk
3.If you haven't used a bootable disk ensure a clean boot either by
--->Pressing F5 during Bootup
--->By removing all devices drivers on the CONFIG.SYS including the HIMEN.SYS .Keep in mind that it should be done in Edit command.

Final words

BIOS the basic input and output services which are performed by the system to turn on the PC and all its functionalities whenever we switch on the system.Bootstrap loader will be present along with BIOS so first this has to loaded to start the PC.Once the bootstrap loader is loaded then BIOS will be loaded and then operating system will be loaded accordingly.Data will be flowed to all the devices which are connected to our system.Devices like keyboard, mouse, speakers and printers this gets the signal from the bios to start the functionality. After getting signals from BIOS then they will wake up and do the needful for the user.
